Wind Reach Farm
WindReach Farm is a 105 acre farm which is accessible for people with disabilities. It was founded by Sandy Mitchell, who was born with cerebral palsy and grew up on a farm. He had a vision to enable others with challenges to be able to enjoy nature, farming and the outdoors. WindReach Farm has been in existence since 1989 and runs a range of programs that cater for individuals of all ages with disabilities, including an adult day program, therapeutic riding, vocational work experience, day visitors, overnight stays in accessible accommodations, an integrated summer camp and a wool program, as well as volunteer opportunities for students and adults.
The Farm has a flock of about 20 sheep of mixed breeds, including Border Leicester, Romney, Corriedale and Blue Faced Leicester. They are sheared once a year and their fleeces are hand processed on the farm by participants and volunteers. The wool is used to make wearables and artistic creations which are enjoyed by participants or sold to bring funds back to this charitable organization.
We have a great group of wool volunteers, most of whom are spinners with their own wheels. We have hand spun yarn, finished wool products, wool kits and wool in all stages of processing, which we sell on event days and in our farm store. We dye our wool using plants from around the farm and maintain a dye garden. We use food colouring dyes for colours not easily found in nature. Our wool displays and demonstrations can often be seen out in the community, promoting programs at the farm and raising awareness about the wonders of wool!
